Union Comeback Comes Up Short In Columbus
Columbus, Oh – The Philadelphia Union trailed 2-0 at the half but battled back to tie the game 2-2 with about 5 minutes to go. The Crew scored the game winner a minute after Jack McInerney evened the game. The loss mathematically eliminates the Union from making the MLS playoffs. The third year club made playoffs last season after spending most of the year near the top of the table. This year Philadelphia never could get things rolling which lead to the firing of the Union’s outspoken manager Peter Nowak. Also the team made several trades and the Union look nothing like the team from 2011.
As the team moves on to the off-season will manager John Hackworth continue to mix up the line-up? I believe so since there are a lot players on the reserve side that could use some meaningful minutes. This also is a chance for Hackworth to build for 2013, the fans want results but now is the time to get playtime and experience. It it always a painful time when a team is eliminated from the playoffs and hurts even more when the team loses so many games by one goal. On the upside they last time the Union scored two or more goals in a game was their July 4 and 8 wins over LA and Toronto. Danny Cruz also scored his first goal for the Union since joining the club August 16 in a trade with DC, and Jack McInerney’s goal was his first goal since July 29.
The Union have five games remaining on the season, with two of them home matches Oct. 6 against New England and the season finale Oct. 27 as rivals New York come to town. Philadelphia will not play post season soccer but the team can play spoiler and knock teams out of the playoffs also to some players it is playoff soccer as they will play for jobs next year.
