Real Madrid Cruise To A 2-0 Win Over Celtic FC In Philadelphia
Philadelphia, PA- Real Madrid blanked Scottish side Celtic 2-0 in a friendly at Lincoln Financial Field. The Spanish giants controlled most of the game and had nearly 63% of the possession. Real Madrid also had 7 shots on target to Celtic’s zero.
The Spanish League Champs did however bring a much deeper roster and played all its key players. Whereas the Glasgow, Scotland based Celtic rested some of its better players since they had just opened up Scottish League play last weekend and will travel to Finland Wednesday for a Champions League Qualifier.
The scoring was opened up mid-way through the first in the 22nd minute when Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain squeezed through the Celtic defense in the box and tapped a soft ball to Joe Maria Callejon who walked the ball in from a yard out.
Real Madrid nearly doubled the score line nine minutes later as Cristiano Ronaldo broke into the box. Ronaldo put his head down and drilled his 15 yard shot right into Celtic keeper Lukasz Zaluska.
Celtic tried to recover but seemed to have a hard time stringing together more than 3 to 4 passes. “The Bhoys” from Glasgow almost got on the score sheet in the 45th minute as Joe Ledley’s 21-yard shot just cleared the cross bar by a few inches.
The second half begin with Real Madrid peppering the Celtic backline with shots and deep possession. Celtic managed to hang on to the 1-0 score until the 67th minute when Karim Benzema added goal. Benzema beat Adam Matthews with a sneaky move and hammered a shot far left post into the back net making it 2-0 to Real Madrid.
In the 72 minute whole stadium went silent when Dylan McGeouch (Celtic) caught a shoulder to his jaw during an aerial challenge from Nura Sahin and fell to the ground unconscious. Players from both sides immediately called for the medical staff to assist McGeouch as he lay motionless on the ground. The medical staff rushed onto the pitch. When they arrived the staff reached into his mouth to open up his throat and made numerous attempts to wake him. About five minutes into treatment he regained some movements. He was eventually carted off on a stretcher wearing a neck brace.
When the teams resumed play the energy and fight was lost. The final 20 minutes were played at a training level with neither pushing to hard for a goal.
After the match Celtic manager Neil Lennon spoke briefly about Dylan McGeouch, “They think he suffered a fractured jaw. He’s in a distressing state when I left him. He had an injection and he’s on his way to the hospital now. I thought he had a great first half for us and we’ll keep our fingers crossed he can make a quick recovery. He may need surgery to repair it, and bit of shock as well.”
Real Madrid Manager Jose Mourinho was asked about his thoughts about tour,“The only thing bad to have come was today, obviously on the field with the scare with the player. What happened to Alex with the injury with the knee, the scare that we had with that. We’ve had good games. We’ve had very positive and successful games. As well as small details we have to work on during training and for the next couple of games.
Midfielder Xabi Alonnso for Real Madrid was asked to address the 2-0 win over Celtic in Philadelphia , ”We played pretty well, and most of the balls that we were setting were completed. Because of that, we were quite pleased. We’ve had very good fan support in every city that we have gone to, and that is very important for the club.”
