Aston Villa’s Lone Goal Sinks Union 1 – 0 In Friendly At PPL Park
Chester, PA – The Philadelphia Union were handed a 1-0 defeat by English side Aston Villa on a lone goal from Nathan Delfouneso. The strike came in the 43rd minute as Delfouneso brought down a pass from Stephen Warnock and drilled a line-drive shot from just outside the 18 yard box.
The result wasn’t pleasing to the most the 17,195 fans in attendance but Villa fans bunched together next to The IllegitimateS (Section 133) seemed to love it. The IllegitimeS and Son of Ben fans looked to be having fun all night going back and forth with chants. Ray Gaddis after the match Said,”Union fans are the best in the league and I couldn’t hear the Villa fans over the Union fans.” This speaks volumes for the fan base as they stayed loud until final whistle even though it was a friendly.
The match was a good tune up for the Union as they have huge league match Saturday on the road against heated rivals New York Red Bulls that won 1- 0 over the Chicago Fire earlier in the day. On the other hand it was a good work out for the Villa side as well with stops next in Chicago and Portland before returning home to start English Premier League play (August). Aston Villa Manager Paul Lambert commented on how it was good for his team to go up against a Union side that deep into their season. Lambert also commented on the level of play from both sides and he will pleased if his squad can get these kind of results in next two friendlies.
The Union and its fans can be pleased with fact that no were major injuries. The normally the biggest concern these mid-season exhibition matches it get the players at all level reps and get out the match healthy.
