Fireworks In LA For The Union As They Knock Off The LA Galaxy 2-1
Carson, CA- The Philadelphia Union winning on July 4th seemed perfect since it’s the city where a ‘Union’ was formed on July 4th, 1776 . Also fitting is the team’s motto: “jungite aut perite”, Latin for “join or die, which was used in 1754 by Benjamin Franklin.
The winner for the Union came off the right foot Michael Farfan in 95th minute of play. The goal was set up on back heel flick from Leo Pajoy that M. Farfan collected a few yards outside the 18 yard box. M. Farfan took three touches on the ball and put it to the far right post from 16 yards out. This put Union up 2-1 with just a under a minute left in the game.
Michael Farfan has had two huge games now at the Home Depot Center. Earlier in the season he put on some tricky moves to set up Freddy Adu’s lone goal in the Union’s win over Chivas USA. Tonight he put those same moves to work just before the half to set up Jack McInerney’s goal. Ironically McInerney’s goal was a back heel flick goal off the same post as Adu’s back heel flick score over Chivas USA.
The final of 2-1 to Philadelphia does not reflect LA’s dominance in the first half and parts of the 2nd half. But fitting, as it seems to be the Achilles’ heel of the Union this season, to control a game and come up pointless. So to be dominated and walk out with three points the Union can thank the football gods. LA had 55% possession of the ball, out shot Philly 16 to 8 and had 9 corner kicks to the Union’s 6. But a lot of LA’s shoots were ones of frustration that sailed wide and over the cross bar.
LA did finally find the back of the net in the 73rd minute as a streaking Chad Barrett connected on the short deflect pass in the box by Robbie Keane. After the goal LA tried to ride the crowd and push for the win. But Union were busy looking for the win too, so final minutes for both teams were wide open. Union rookie sub Antoine Hoppenot almost found the back of the net in the 77th minute as he seemed to run circles around the winded LA backline.
In the end Union ever present defense and keeper Zac MacMath held on while dodge bullets all night. The win is Philadelphia’s first ever victory over the LA Galaxy.
