The USA took on Sweden in the last match of Group C at Volkswagen Arena in front of 23,468 people. The USA got behind QUICKLY and never seemed to recover. Sweden got on the board in the early with a converted penalty kick from Lisa Dahlkvist in the 16th minute.
19 minutes later in the 35th minute Nilla Fischer of Sweden converted on a direct kick from 24 yards out that deflected off a US defender.
The USA seemed poised to mount a comeback in the second half. The sleeping giant was awoken and the USA got on the board courtesy of Abby Wambach in the 67 minute. It was Abby’s 119th goal in her International career. The goal came off a beautiful corner kick from Lauren Cheney.
The USA almost equalized in the 84th minute off ANOTHER Lauren Cheney cross to Kelley O’Hara, but the went WELL wide of the goal and the sleeping giant decided to just go back to bed.
The loss sends the US to second place in Group C. They will play Group D winners Brazil on Sunday July 10th in the Quarterfinals in Dresden.
