Saturday night’s Philadelphia Union v. Chivas USA game was a nail biter! For Brian Riedel of Hazleton, PA there was a lot more than 3 points on the line. Brian was about to ask for Misty Lynn Kirpa’s hand in marriage… in front of 18,137 of his closest friends.
“It was in the 83′ minute right after Danny Mwanga knocked in the winning goal. I leaned in to tell her I love her, I already had the ring box in my hand. She had no idea, I had already asked her Dad for the proper permission, I had kept this a secret from everyone but my sisters. We had brought two of our friends to their first Union match, they had no idea as well.” – Brian Riedel
While the rest of us were anxiously awaiting the final whistle Brian was anxiously awaiting an answer from the love of his life Misty.
It was minute 83… Brian leaned in and kissed my cheek and said, “I love you.” I smiled and said , “Marry Me Someday.” He chuckled and said, “Your Dad said, ‘Yes’.” Then he got down on his knee with the open box. It was a complete surprise. I could hear all kinds of silence and then cheering and chanting! It was amazing… the energy rumbled. –Misty Lynn Kirpa
She said YES! In the moments that followed Section 133 erupted with the chant, “SHE SAID YES! SHE SAID YES! SHE SAID YES!” and “Oh They’re Getting Married” to the tune of The White Stripes’ tune “Seven Nation Army.” Both chants eventually found their way over to the River End who soon joined in.
Section 133 had been celebrating the 1st birthday of their Supporters Group at the Chivas USA match. The official birthday of The IllegitimateS is June 27th. We have had MANY 1sts as a Supporters Group over the past year and we were quite happy to have the first marriage proposal in our Section at the Chivas USA match.
We will treasure that day, that moment, this time with you all in Section 133. We doop now with an extra special meaning!!!! –Brian Riedel
To many of you out there it may seem odd for someone to want to propose at PPL Park in front of screaming fans, but the Philadelphia Union played a small part in Brian and Misty getting together in the first place.
We met last May for tea and coffee in a Perkin’s near my home. The night we met, Brian and his son had been at the FC Dallas game. They were running late getting back. Brian was pulled over for speeding, but his son was talking to the officer about the game. The officer let him go with a warning! Thank goodness for 11 year old lack of inhibitions! We have been inseparable ever since. He and his two sons are huge Union fans. They took my daughter, Genna, and I to the first game at PPL Park last year, and we have been hooked ever since!
So, Brian, Myself, Brian Jr, Genna, and Little Leo are definitely a Union Family! – Misty Lynn Kirpa
The newly engaged wanted to leave us with some parting words for each another.
We are two of a kind, we are mates for life, we are best friends, more than any thing I could have ever hoped for in a mate. –Brian Riedel
It’s rare to find a genuine happiness. Too often people connect for the wrong reasons… we are lucky to honestly be the closest of friends and completely in love as well. He is such a good person. I am so very lucky! – Misty Lynne Kirpa
A memorable game for us has become truly unforgettable to Brian and Misty. We wish them both the best of luck as they get ready to spend the rest of their lives together.
